About Chicago
Historical Chicago, Illinois has long been one of America's most well-loved cities and is undoubtedly the largest and most visited city in the Midwest. Chicago was founded in 1833, and today it is home to nearly 3 million people with nearly 10 million people living in the greater Chicagoland area. In the early years of the city, its position on Lake Michigan and near the Mississippi River made it a major transportation hub. Even now, the O'Hare Airport remains the second busiest airport in the world.
From a tourist's standpoint, Chicago is best known for its architecture, its cultural institutions and its shopping. The city is home to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), the tallest building in the United States. The city is also home to one of the country's largest and most renowned art museums, the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium. The famous Brookfield Zoo is on the outskirts of the city, and within the city tourists can also enjoy theater, opera, symphonies and ballet. More materially minded visitors will no doubt be headed to Chicago's Magnificent Mile.
